Safari 5 and extensions

When Safari 5 introduced extensions, it gave me a compelling reason to try it out.  I have been a diehard Firefox user since mid 2005 when I discovered the browser during my Windows days, and since it was cross platform, I happily continued using Firefox on my first MacBook.  With the recent releases of Firefox 3.6 becoming slower and more unstable, I began seeking out a new browser, but that’s for another post.

Here are the current extensions that I find incredibly useful for Safari 5:

AdBlock: The first extension I install in any browser to clean up the web.

SafariRestore: Restores your previous Safari sessions on startup.

Gentle Status Bar: By far the best looking and behaving fade-away status bar for Safari. Sure, it may not have any options, but it doesn’t need them.

NoMoreiTunes: Prevents iTunes from launching on preview pages.

A Cleaner YouTube: Makes watching videos an eye-pleasing experience.

YouTube Wide: Widens YouTube videos without the extra click.  Absolutely excellent when paired with A Cleaner YouTube.

FaceBlock: Simply blocks Facebook ads.

Pioneer One is pretty much awesome.  It’s an original dramatic series created by Josh Bernhard and Bracey Smith.  The pilot was shot for $6000 and is available for free download via bittorrent.  If you have a free 35 minutes, watch it.  It will be worth your time.

Whenever I have my MacBook Pro out in public I always get complements and comments about my wallpaper.

When it comes to them, I’m a very hard person to please.  Most wallpaper, I can’t stand for more than 15 minutes.  Others, I’ll use others for weeks, sometimes months at a time.

(The picture atop this post has been my wallpaper for a few weeks now).

What draws me to it is that it is such a serene place, photographed at the absolute wrong time.  Most people wouldn’t want to be here with an encroaching storm and the construction that is taking place, yet I find it oddly inviting.  The photo seems to be beckoning me into one of the houses on the hilltop.  I find myself wanting to curl up with a hot cup of Earl Grey Bravo and a good book; to spend the afternoon reading and looking out over the ocean.

I love landscape wallpapers, but if you give me a beautiful beach with a cliché sunset I won’t be able to stand it for more than a day.  Give me something like the above, and who knows when I’ll be able to find a picture suitable enough to take its place.
